Community Sport: The Backbone of Wellbeing
In the Wimmera, staying active isn’t a lifestyle trend. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have to support physical health, mental wellbeing and social connection.

Across our townships where distances are longer and services can be limited, local sport and recreation becomes more than an activity.
It becomes the backbone of wellbeing.
Moving and being physically active supports our bodies, but belonging supports our minds.
Being part of a club, group or team provides routine, accountability and connection.
When people feel known, valued and included, the ripple effects extend far beyond the oval, court or playing field.
One of the most powerful aspects of community sport in the Wimmera is its intergenerational nature.
It is not uncommon to see grandparents on the sidelines, parents coaching, and children pulling on the same club colours.
In many cases, families aren’t just attending sport together, they are playing it together.
Getting the chance to play sport or be on the same team as family are among my most cherished memories.
These shared experiences create stories that stay within families for decades Dad and daughter, mother and son, grandparent and grandchild.
These moments strengthen relationships and reinforce a sense of identity that stretches beyond individual achievement.
Unlike many other parts of life, community sport brings together people who might otherwise never cross paths.
Farmers, teachers, tradies, health workers, retirees and teenagers all standing side by side wearing the same club colours.
It is one of the few places left where age, occupation and background fade, and shared purpose takes over.
In that environment, young people learn respect.
Adults rediscover perspective.
Communities build trust. Social cohesion is not built through grand statements.
It is built through shared effort, common purpose and collective pride.
