St Michaels, Central Park claim victories

Round nine of the Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant competition took place on Saturday, November 29, with Central Park continuing their undefeated start to the season, while St Michaels overcame Kalkee.

In a competitive contest at Kalkee Tennis Club, St Michaels defeated Kalkee 8-6. 

Both sides were equal at two sets apiece after the opening four doubles rubbers.

For Kalkee, Meaghan Pohlner and Anna Exell defeated Mia Rees and Jess Cannane in an 8-7 thriller, and Jeff Friberg and Grant Schultz defeated Eli Bailey and Archer Reading 8-2, while for St Michaels, Steve Schultz and Peter Hayes defeated Jordan Friberg and Luke Byrne 8-3, and Kassie Peachey and Ayva Robertson overcame Keeley Schultz and Emily Polack 8-6. 

St Michaels then swept the four singles rubbers, as Steve Schultz defeated Jordan Friberg 8-5, Eli Bailey edged out Jeff Friberg 8-7, Mia Rees defeated Meaghan Pohlner 8-2, and Kassie Peachey defeated Keeley Schultz 8-2. 

St Michaels then secured the overall victory with two additional wins in the remaining doubles rubbers, as Peter Hayes and Archer Reading defeated Luke Byrne and Grant Schulz 8-6, and Steve Schultz and Archer Reading overcame Jordan Friberg and Grant Schultz 8-7. 

Kalkee then won the remaining matches, as Anna Exell and Emily Polack defeated Jess Cannane and Ayva Robertson 8-3, Meaghan Pohlner and Emily Polack beat Mia Rees and Ayva Robertson 8-0, Jeff Friberg and Luke Byrne edged out Eli Bailey and Peter Hayes 8-7, while Keeley Schultz and Anna Exell overcame Kassie Peachey and Jess Cannane 8-7. 

At Horsham Lawn Tennis Club, Central Park defeated Horsham Lawn 10-4. 

Central Park established an early 3-1 set lead in the opening four doubles rubbers, as Matt Jones and Reece Harman defeated D’Artagnan Walls and Lachlan Punchard 8-6, Willow Sainsbury and Sienna Nitschke defeated Tahlia and Maree Thompson 8-4, and Adele Joseph and Hayley Reid overcame Ella and Paige Thompson 8-4, while August Koch and Graeme Wood got Horsham Lawn on the board with an 8-5 win over Frazer Shurdington and Brendan Nitschke. 

Central Park extended their lead to 7-1 in the singles rubbers, as Matt Jones defeated D’Artagnan Walls 8-2, Frazer Shurdington defeated August Koch 8-6, Willow Sainsbury defeated Tahlia Thompson 8-4, and Adele Joseph beat Ella Thompson 8-1. 

The final six doubles rubbers were shared evenly between both teams. 

For Central Park, Sienna Nitschke and Hayley Reid defeated Maree and Paige Thompson 8-4, Willow Sainsbury and Hayley Reid defeated Tahlia and Paige Thompson 8-5, and Adele Joseph and Sienna Nitschke overcame Ella and Maree Thompson 8-6. 

For Horsham Lawn, Lachlan Punchard and Graeme Wood proved too strong for Reece Harman and Brendan Nitschke as they won 8-1, D’Artagnan Walls and Graeme Wood overcame Matt Jones and Brendan Nitschke 8-6, and August Koch and Lachlan Punchard defeated Frazer Shurdington and Reece Harman 8-6.

Among the other grades, all three B special clashes went down to the wire, as Central Park just defeated Horsham Lawn Bardell (8-8), Natimuk defeated Horsham Lawn Savage (8-8), and Haven overcame Laharum (9-7).
